History of Medina County
Medina County was established in 1812 from the Connecticut Western Reserve Lands. It is located in north central Ohio twenty-eight miles southwest of Cleveland. It is also the nineteenth most populous county in the state.
Medina County is currently one of the top ten fastest growing counties in Ohio. The area's strategic location, coupled with its experienced work force and cooperative business environment, has attracted a large variety of industries. Medina is known to many as the home of A.I. Root Company, bee culturists, manufacturers of bee keepers’ supplies and publishers of agricultural literature.
The City of Medina, the county seat, had a population in 1990 of 19,231. The largest city in terms of population in Brunswick (28,218 - 1990 census). The City of Wadsworth, located in the southeast portion of the county, had 15,718 residents in 1990. In addition to the three cities, there are eight villages and 17 townships located within Medina County. The seventeen townships include Brunswick, Chatham, Granger, Guilford, Harrisville, Hinckley, Homer, Lafayette, Litchfield, Liverpool, Medina, Montville, Sharon, Spencer, Wadsworth, Westfield, and York. The county population estimate from 1997 is 147,522. Medina County comprises approximately 425 square miles.
